How Does Medicare Work for Carrier Screening?
What is Medicare?
Medicare is insurance offered to Australian citizens and permanent residents. The insurance scheme provides healthcare and offers services at discounted or no cost.Medicare is taxpayer funded, allowing access to health insurance for all Australians.
Services Medicare covers;
- Visiting a doctor
- Receiving treatment as a public patient in hospital
- Filling a Pharmaceutical Benefit Scheme (PBS) prescription
- Select pathology tests
How do I access Medicare?
To access Medicare you must register with Services Australia and enrol. If eligible, you will be provided with a green Medicare card.

Lumi Heath Medicare Eligibility:
Medicare eligibility is available for the total cost of Lumi Standard Carrier Screening and for the Standard test portion of the Lumi Extended and Comprehensive Carrier Screening.
To access Medicare rebate for the Lumi tests, the following criteria applies;
- A valid Medicare card
- Biologically female
- Planning a pregnancy or currently pregnant up to 8 weeks gestation
- Over 18 years of age
