Lumi Health
What Drives Lumi Health:
From November 1st, carrier screening testing for three genetic conditions; Fragile X, Cystic Fibrosis, and Spinal Muscular Atrophy, will be covered by Medicare*. This initiative will make genetic testing for these conditions more accessible, providing couples planning a pregnancy with knowledge, allowing them to make informed decisions about their future.
Who is Lumi Health
Lumi Health is a collaboration of three genetic companies; myDNA, the Victorian Clinical Genetics Service (VCGS), and Murdoch Childrens Research Institute (MCRI). Lumi Health has over 35 years experience in carrier screening, combining cutting edge scientific knowledge. You’ll feel confident to know you’ll be supported by experts to guide you through the process.
Testing options
Lumi Health will provide three Carrier screening options to choose from. The Standard test covers 3 conditions, the Extended test covers over 600 conditions whilst the Comprehensive test covers over 1200 conditions, including relevant subtypes of the genetic condition. These tests will provide information regarding genetics and inherited genetic disorders.
The Standard test covers the 3 most common inherited genetic diseases within our population, Cystic Fibrosis (CF), Fragile X Syndrome (FXS), and Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA). The Standard will be medicare covered* ensuring that access to informed planning and support is provided throughout the journey.
The Extended test is designed for couples, covering over 620 genes including those in the standard test and insights into over 600 conditions, including relevant subtypes of the genetic condition. The standard conditions are covered by Medicare and extended testing will cost $740 per couple (2 people) for those that are Medicare eligible* and $1,100 for those not eligible.
The Comprehensive test is also designed for couples offering screening of over 1200 genes and 1200 genetic conditions, including relevant subtypes of the genetic condition. This test is the most comprehensive test on the market covering more conditions than any other provider. The standard conditions are covered by Medicare and comprehensive testing will cost $890 per couple (2 people) for those that are Medicare eligible* and $1,250 for those not eligible.
How does the screening test work?
Lumi kits are available to purchase online and then it's a simple cheek swab in the comfort of your own home. You’ll have instructions to set up your own portal which will guide you through the process and will be the way in which your report will be delivered confidentially and securely.
For the Standard test, the female will test first for any of the 3 conditions (CF, SMA, FXS), should the test reveal that any one of these conditions is present, there will be a test sent to the nominated partner for further testing.
The Extended and Comprehensive test is set up for couples with 2 swabs, so couples can test at the same time. Each person will have their own portal to continue the journey and individual reports will be sent to each account.
*Who is Medicare Eligible
Anyone in Australia that is over 18 years of age, female and has a Medicare card is eligible to claim Medicare through Lumi Health.
